Vampires

Vampires in Duela originate from Hauru.

They were created from loneliness, not conquest. Hauru wanted family, companionship, and people who could exist near her without dying.

Because of this, vampires in Duela are not only predators. They are also families, cults, bloodlines, social networks, religious communities, and living consequences of Hauru's curse.

Origin

The first vampires were created by Hauru after she withdrew beneath the mountain.

Not every vampire was created directly by Hauru. The oldest and most important vampires are the Hezuraitona, who were made by Hauru herself.

Later generations include the Haurizan and common vampires.

Types of vampires

Hezuraitona

The Hezuraitona are ancient vampires created directly by Hauru.

They are tied to her and are effectively immortal.

Haurizan

Haurizan are offspring of the Hezuraitona, created through ritual adoption.

They live extremely long lives and are bound to the ritual leader.

Common vampires

Common vampires are more vulnerable to hunger, isolation, and loss of control.

When starved or rejected from vampire society, they may become feral and predatory.

Hunger

Vampiric hunger is not only physical.

It can be hunger for life, warmth, blood, Essence, family, belonging, memory, or divine connection.

Different vampire lines experience hunger differently.

Society

Vampires often organize themselves through families, houses, clans, cult structures, and pilgrimage obligations.

Some hide among mortal society. Others live closer to Hauru's mountain and participate directly in ritual life.

The Pilgrimage

All vampires are urged to undertake The Pilgrimage to Hauru's mountain.

There they celebrate life, tell stories, strengthen bonds, and renew their connection to Hauru.
